Keynnard Campbell's reign of terror over SCISAA schools in the Lowcountry came to an abrupt end -- at least temporarily -- Friday night on Hilton Head Island.
Hilton Head Prep knocked Bible Baptist's star quarterback out of the game early in the second quarter and rolled to a 52-18 rout of the previously unbeaten Braves behind tough defense and the running of Teron Daley.
"We caught some attention tonight," Hilton Head Prep head coach Kevin Wald said. "But we've still got a long ways to go. It's a nice win, but you've got to take things one game at a time."
During the Braves' 3-0 start, which included 88-47 and 44-27 routs of Thomas Heyward Academy and Hilton Head Christian Academy, respectively, Campbell had rolled up 949 passing yards and 13 touchdowns to go with 721 rushing yards and eight more scores.
Never miss a local story.
The Dolphins (2-1) were leading 17-6 when Campbell left the game with an apparent leg injury suffered at the end of a 7-yard run. He would not return, spending the rest of the game sitting on the bench with his pads and one shoe off.
"If you would have told me ...," Wald said and stopped in disbelief. "We were still playing well and in the lead when he was in the game."
It may not have mattered, however, because the Braves had no answer for Daley. The senior running back amassed close to 300 yards and had touchdown runs of 40, 5, 92 and 75 yards.
Wald said Daley almost didn't play. He's been suffering from flu-like symptoms for a couple of days.
"Teron really wasn't feeling well tonight," Wald said. "He's a good player. What a night!"
John Larson's 37-yard scoring reception put the Dolphins up 17-6 just before Campbell's exit. That Braves' drive was ended when Zenon Parker picked off Brighton Gale's pass at the 19.
But after a three-and-out by the Dolphins, the snap sailed over the head of Dolphins punter Cole Gardocki into the end zone. Rather than knock it out of the end zone for the safety, Gardocki tried to run the ball out and was tackled at the 2.
Two plays later, Chad Boatright scored to cut the lead to 17-12. The Braves stayed aggressive. Boatright tried the onside kick and recovered it himself.
"I was like, 'Oh boy, here we go,' " Wald said. "The touchdown, onside kick and they're a score away from taking the lead. Here we go."
But it wasn't to be.
After three straight incompletions, Bible Baptist went for it on fourth-and-10 from the Hilton Head Prep 49. Gale's pass sailed high and was intercepted by Sean O'Connor playing center field. He zig-zagged his way to the right sideline and rambled 75 yards for the touchdown to kill the Braves' rally.
Bible Baptist's next two drives ended in a fumble and a punt, and both were answered with Daley touchdown runs, putting the game out of reach.
The Dolphins host Palmetto Christian on Friday in their region opener.
"The region opener," Wald said. "That's when it gets serious."
