Colleton Prep tried to play keep away on Friday evening.
Hilton Head Prep was having none of it.
The Dolphins got three touchdowns from Teron Daley and beat the War Hawks 28-7, despite converting just nine first downs and running 40 fewer plays than Colleton Prep.
"They played keep away. But that's why you make them earn every hash mark on the field," Hilton Head Prep coach Kevin Wald said. "They wanted to keep the ball away from us. And (their wishbone offense), that plays to their strength."
Never miss a local story.
The War Hawks' first drive of the second half was a perfect example. They came out of the locker room trailing 21-7 and proceeded to go on a 19-play march down the field that ate up 9:12 off the clock.
The problem for Colleton Prep was it got no points out of the drive. Going for it on fourth and 13 from the 13-and-a-half yard line, War Hawks quarterback Tanner Crosby threw an interception to Zenon Parker in the end zone, one of two for him on the night, to end the drive that took nearly 25 minutes in real time.
Wald, who admitted he'd never seen a drive that long that resulted in no points, said his defense's ability to bend but not break was a key to the Dolphins' success.
"We're not a very high-risk defense," Wald said. "We don't blitz a lot. We just try to keep everything in front of us. But (our defense was) on the field a lot. And to do that and hold a team to 7 points, that's pretty good."
After the long drive, Colleton Prep never mounted another serious threat, and Daley sprinted 16 yards up the middle to the end zone with 2:19 remaining to seal the win.
The Dolphins punched the War Hawks in the face early.
Hilton Head Prep opened the game with a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive that took less than two minutes before Tyler Fox rumbled in from 15 yards out for the game's first touchdown.
Less than four minutes later, the Dolphins took advantage of a weak War Hawks quick kick and Daley scored on a one-play, 35-yard drive all of his own to make it 14-0.
"Offensively, we just shot out of a cannon in the first quarter," Wald said. "But later in the game, silly penalties killed drives at unfortunate times."
Daley finished with 108 yards and two touchdowns.
But it was Daley's second touchdown -- on defense -- that was the play that was the real back-breaker for Colleton Prep. With the War Hawks driving deep in Hilton Head Prep territory, they ran a misdirection play on third and 6 from the Dolphins' 4.
"Logan Mallet just went in and blew the play up," Daley said. "He fumbled the ball, and I picked it up and didn't stop running."
