All football teams know to expect setbacks during the season. But no one wants to address them this early.
Battery Creek enters Week 1 hobbled from physical preseason scrimmages. Quarterback Rocky Smalls injured his knee and will miss weeks. Dolphins coach Jim Shuman expects to know the full extent next week.
Starting offensive linemen Alex Nelson (shoulder) and Paul Sanchez (foot) are also out for Friday's game at Estill.
The injuries mean Battery Creek will run less of its favored option, Shuman said, instead relying on play-action and trying to develop tall target Eric Freeman as a go-to receiver. Sophomore Malik Morgan will start at quarterback and is expected to share duties with freshman Justin Cochran.
Never miss a local story.
Here is my story previewing Battery Creek's season.
When I reached Beaufort High coach Mark Clifford on Thursday morning, he was in class. The first thing he said was that the Eagles' practice Wednesday was probably the best he had seen in 10 years at Beaufort High.
I don't know what that means for the Eagles' chances at home against Wando on Friday -- the Warriors won 37-0 a season ago -- but it seems Clifford's group is in a good state of mind.
Here is my story on Clifford and the Eagles' changing things up for 2013.
I'll be at Beaufort High on Friday night. Enjoy your first full weekend of football, folks.
