The Hilton Head Island High School boys and girls cross country teams each finished fifth Saturday at their traditional season-opener, the Providence Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte.
The meet featured more than 1,600 runners from more than 50 schools.
Carly McGlinn led the Hilton Head girls, finishing 36th with a time of 20 minutes, 33 seconds. Abby Gross also clocked a time of 20:33, finishing two spots behind McGlinn. The Seahawks had four other runners place in the top 50, as they scored 216 team points and had the highest team finish of any of the schools from South Carolina competing in the meet.

The Hilton Head boys had two runners place in the top 15, led by Colton Hennessey, who finished in a time of 15:42 to place seventh. Cisco Ferre also cracked the top 15, coming in 14th with a mark of 15:55. The only South Carolina team to finish ahead of the Seahawks was Lexington, which was the top Class 4-A team in the state last season.
Hilton Head's junior varsity boys team finished third.
The Seahawks will be in action again Saturday at Hilton Head Prep, participating in the annual Run for Ret 5K.

Fleet Feet Cross Country Kickoff: Whale Branch Early College High School's cross country runners made their debut Saturday in Savannah, and the team was led by Wesley Murphy, who placed 87th out of 212 runners.
Murphy finished with a time of 20:32. Karlton Washington placed 186th in 24:47, and Antwan Brown was 187th in 24:48.
Warhawk Invitational at Colleton Prep: Hilton Head Prep bowed out in the semifinals with its second loss of the day to Holly Hill.
The Dolphins opened the tournament on Friday with a 25-17, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17 win over Andrew Jackson. They opened Saturday's play with a 22-25, 20-25, 20-25 loss to Holly Hill before bouncing back to earn a spot in the semifinals with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 victory over Beaufort Academy.
Hilton Head Prep stumbled in the semifinals 16-25, 21-25, 18-25.
Tournament leaders for the Dolphins (2-3) included Taylor Kent with 14 aces, 44 kills and six blocks; Megan Kelly with 13 aces and 12 kills; Deia Hunt with 11 kills and five blocks; and Carlie Van with 13 aces and 60 assists.
Hilton Head Prep returns home for Tuesday's match against Ashley Hall.
Northwood Invitational: Beaufort Academy and Hilton Head Christian each opened the season on a strong note at the 14-team meet.
For Beaufort Academy, the Eagles placed in the top five in 9 events, including a third-place showing by Madeleine Gray in the girls 500 freestyle (6:06.06).
Also, Carsyn Bostwick was fourth in the 100 freestyle, Michaela Russell placed fifth in the 100 freestyle, Maya Bostwick finished fifth in the 100 backstroke and Carsyn Bostwick was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
The Beaufort Academy girls also placed third in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.
Among the Beaufort Academy boys, Grant Hetherington finished fourth in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
For Hilton Head Christian, Drew Robinson finished third in the boys 100 freestyle. The Eagles also took third in the boys 200 medley relay.
On the girls' side, Hilton Head Christian's Ashley Weaver earned top finishes in both the 200 IM and 100 butterfly.
