Beaufort Academy's Miranda Weslake was named Girls Soccer Player of the Year on Friday when the South Carolina Independent School Coaches Association released its all-state teams for SCISAA spring sports.
A junior, Weslake scored 32 goals and tallied 16 assists to lead the Eagles (16-2) to the SCISAA Class 1-A/2-A state championship.
"In our drive to the state championship, (Miranda) was about sacrificing," Beaufort Academy coach David Byrne said. "She's a natural striker, but we needed her to distribute the ball. Hope Keane scoring four goals in the state championship wouldn't be possible without Miranda. She helped the team instead of scoring all the goals."
Eagles defender Xavia Lemott joined Weslake on the girls soccer all-state squad. Lemott scored eight goals and had 11 assists on the season.
Never miss a local story.
"Xavia was instrumental in shutting down the opposition's top players, and she was the beginning of our attack," Byrne said. "She was skilled with great vision."
Beaufort Academy outscored opponents 126-6 for the year.
Other area girls on the team were Hilton Head Christian's Lexi Lainhart, an 8th-grade midfielder (32 goals, 10 assists) and Hilton Head Prep senior midfielder Halie Parker (21 goals, six assists), a two-year captain.
Two Beaufort Academy boys were named all-state. Senior forward Conner Akers, who scored 13 goals despite playing in just nine games because of a broken leg, and senior midfielder Finn Koppernaes (four goals) were honored. They were joined by Hilton Head Prep's Andrew Spencer.
A couple of area region players of the year were named to the baseball all-state squad.
Thomas Heyward senior Ryan Day, the Region 1-AA honoree, was 7-3 with a Class 2A-leading ERA of 1.49 this season. He also hit .425 with 30 RBIs and 21 steals.
Day was joined by Hilton Head Prep senior pitcher/shortstop Jake Martin, Region 3-AAA's top player
Also on the team are Thomas Heyward junior catcher Evan Duncan and Hilton Head Christian sophomore infielder/pitcher Luke Higgs.
Three keys to Hilton Head Christian's runner-up finish in the 3-A boys track competition were honored. Zach Polk (long jump, high jump) and Jamario Williams (200, 400 meters) won two titles each, while Reed Shindell finished second in the discus for the Eagles.
Andrew Schafer and Jared Woodson, who led Hilton Head Prep to the Class 3-A final, were honored, as were Charlie and Hampton Drake of Hilton Head Christian.
Already announced at the 3-A golf tournament, four of the golfers on Hilton Head Christian's state championship squad are all-state: RJ Bartolomucci, JD Lehmen (Louisville signee), Bryson Nimmer and Jonathan Schuble.
Hilton Head Prep, which finished third, saw Mitchell Campbell and Woody Woodward (Wake Forest signee) honored.
As previously reported, Thomas Heyward Academy senior stars Brielle Jungblut and Jamie Malphrus were all-state.
