Trey Arant capped an impressive high school wrestling career with a second runner-up finish at the Class 4-A meet, and then the Beaufort High School senior focused on where he would wrestle next.
Coker College, with an NCAA Division II wrestling program preparing for its first season, made the most convincing offer. Arant signed with the Cobras over The Citadel and Spartanburg Methodist.
"I'll be part of a very new program," said Arant, who was also a North-South all-star selection and finished with a 116-51 record in high school. "The school is very behind the program, and they want to make it succeed."
Arant will spend his summer going through a workout program assigned by Cobras coach Cy Wainwright, attending a camp at Coker and wrestling with his former teammates at Beaufort High.
His goals for collegiate wrestling include qualifying and placing at the NCAA Division II wrestling championships. He expects a learning curve.
"The rules are more lenient," Arant said. "You get some points for riding time in college that you don't in high school. There's a few more rules I will have to learn and get used to."
