Hilton Head Island High School's bid for a Class 3-A boys golf state championship came up just a few strokes short Tuesday in Conway, as the Seahawks finished three shots behind defending champion A.C. Flora.
Hilton Head High -- which entered the final round with a two-shot lead on A.C. Flora and St. James -- played only one shot worse than its opening round, but was passed up by a hot-shooting A.C. Flora squad. The Seahawks carded a 314 on Tuesday, but A.C. Flora -- led by Dwight Cauthen's 73 -- came in with a 309 to finish with a two-day total of 624. It was A.C. Flora's fourth straight state title.
The Seahawks got off to a slow start on their front nine, dropping 13 shots behind A.C. Flora. A hot finish pulled Hilton Head High within three strokes, but they ran out of holes.
Hilton Head High's 627 total was identical to its score in last year's state tournament, but their second-place finish was two spots higher.
Never miss a local story.
Hilton Head High's Andrew Orischak also came up just shy of a state championship, finishing second to Greenville's Keenan Huskey in the individual race. Orischak closed with a 74 at Coastal Carolina's Hackler Course for a total of 3-over-par 147. Huskey carded a 71-72--143 to win individual medalist honors.
It was the second consecutive top-10 finish at the state tournament for Orischak, who finished sixth last season as a seventh-grader.
He wasn't the only Seahawk to earn all-state honors with a top-10 spot this season, as junior Gavin Lindstrom finished at 77-78--155 to tie for 10th place.

Class 4-A Boys Golf
GREENVILLE -- Facing a nine-stroke deficit at the start of the final round of the Class 4-A state championship tournament, the South Aiken High School boys' golf team rallied past Boiling Springs to capture the crown Tuesday.
Led by Hayden Ploeger (71-80-74-225), Alex Handy (76-76-75-227), Ryan Carpenter (80-74-77-231) and freshman Jake Carter (86-77-76-239), the Thoroughbreds finished their season with a fourth consecutive come-from-behind tournament victory, this time for the state championship.
Playing in windy and fast conditions at the Furman University Golf Course, South Aiken (313-307-302-922) dominated on the back nine to beat playing partners Boiling Springs (303-308-314-925) and Easley (316-307-307-930).
