Bluffton 7, Thomas Heyward 1: Courtney Smith struck out 15 Rebels in a complete-game effort, and Kim Kerby blasted a three-run home run in the fifth inning to break it open for the Bobcats (2-0) in their home opener.
"There was a string of innings where she was throwing very well," Bluffton coach Bill Ball said. "I think she was having trouble with her grip early in the game because of the wind and the cold.
"She really got in a groove in the latter innings."

Bluffton's Whitney Morrall went 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI.
The Bobcats leave Friday for Alachua, Fla. to play in the Raider Tournament.
Beaufort 4, Hilton Head Island 0: Jenny Mullins struck out 11 and allowed just five hits to lead the Eagles (8-3) past the Seahawks (0-2).
"She did well tonight," Beaufort coach Doug Plank said. "She was getting ahead of batters and had a nice little curve going on the outside corner and later had a rise ball. She had her best game."
Offensive leaders for Beaufort included Natalie Moore (2B, RBI), Megan Cieplowski (1B, RBI) and Presley Thomas (2 hits, RBI). Whitney Halley struck out five while allowing just one earned run for the Seahawks and had a double at the plate.
Beaufort High plays at Battery Creek on Friday, while Hilton Head High hosts Colleton County.
Battery Creek 17, Garrett Tech 3 (4 innings): Augusta Schubert hit two triples and a double, and Autumn Gravel had an inside-the-park home run and a double to lead Battery Creek in the rout.
Tori Hill struck out three and Olivia Nolan had one strikeout as they split time in the circle for the Dolphins (2-0), who play Friday at Beaufort High.
JV: Beaufort High 16, Hilton Head Island 6 (5 innings)
Hilton Head Prep 19, Memorial Day 0 (3 innings): Greg Warren allowed no baserunners and struck out seven in three innings, and he also went 2 for 2 with three RBIs for the Dolphins.
Marcus Hindal was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, Randy Young went 2 for 2 with three RBIs, and Jake Martin was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Hilton Head Prep (3-0), which hosts Wilson Hall for a doubleheader at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Wando 13, Hilton Head Island High 5: Nate Jones scored three goals and Alex Matousek scored twice, but that was all the Seahawks could muster at Wando.
Madison Gayle finished with 11 saves in goal for Hilton Head High (2-2) and Sam Jones made four saves.
The Seahawks play again at 4 p.m. Saturday at Bishop England.
Hilton Head Island 17, West Ashley 3: Haley Matousek led the Seahawks with six goals and an assist, while Abby Odgen added three goals and two assists.
Katy Bautista and Tristyn Sheaffer added two goals apiece for Hilton Head High (3-1), which hosts the Savannah Raiders on Friday and Ashley Hall on Monday.
Maddie Campbell, Kirsten Wartko, Jazzie Morgan and Lilia Montero each had a goal. Carson Kendrick had a pair of assists, and Jess Morris added another.
Shayra Valdez (four saves) and Michele Drayton (one save) were in goal for the Seahawks.
Hilton Head Island 150, Bluffton 171, Battery Creek 251, Whale Branch n/a: Three Seahawks -- Andrew Orischak, Christopher O'Donnell and Gavin Lindstrom -- tied for medalist honors with 37s. Wesley Long led Bluffton with a 38, and John Lee paced Battery Creek wit a 51.
Whale Branch didn't have enough golfers for a team score. The Warriors were paced by Michael Dantzler's 42.
Beaufort High School: Beaufort High posted a team score of 175, finishing third behind Summerville (163) and Ashley Ridge (167) in a five-team meet at Wescott Plantation in Summerville. Fort Dorchester (176) and Colleton County (225) also competed.
Josh Fickes led Beaufort High with a 41. Matthew Campbell shot 42, Keaton Butler 45, Tommy Earl 47 and Alex Porter 51.
The Eagles play again next Wednesday at Summerville.
Aiken 4, Beaufort High 2: The doubles team of Skyler Bursch and Daniel Lange moved to 4-0, but the Eagles fell to 2-3.

Beaufort High and Battery Creek will travel Saturday to take part in the Diamond Hornet Invitational in Columbia.
