Big brother is helping out in a pinch.
When Whale Branch Early College High School athletics director Carlos Cave learned Monday the Warriors would have to move their third-round Class 1-A boys playoff game because of a S.C. High School League rule requiring a larger venue, he called Battery Creek High School athletics director John Drafts. Just like that, the game found a new home.
Whale Branch will host C.E. Murray tonight at 7 p.m. at Battery Creek. The winner advances to the Class 1-A Lower State title game Saturday in Florence.
Warriors coach Linc Lyles said his team was familiar with Battery Creek's gym, having played there this season and during the summer. Some current Whale Branch players attended Battery Creek as freshmen.
Never miss a local story.
"That was automatic," Cave said. "The kids are comfortable playing there. It's nothing from a travel standpoint for our fans."
Whale Branch officials will conduct the game just like a home game, Cave said, handling the gate and providing security. Battery Creek will run concessions.
S.C. High School League rules (Page 39) stipulate that third-round playoff venues seat at least 1,500 people. Whale Branch's gym seats about 680 for basketball games, while Battery Creek seats about 1,620.
Whale Branch (22-3) coasted to a 62-46 victory over Timmonsville on Friday night, and C.E. Murray had little trouble dispatching Baptist Hill, 67-52.
The rule did not affect Monday night's Class 1-A Lower State semifinal girls basketball playoff game between Whale Branch and Hemingway. There is no minimum seating requirement for girls playoff games.
