Tyler Chisholm had a little too much energy in the postgame huddle Friday night for Hilton Head Christian Academy coach Tommy Lewis' liking.
The normally subdued running back jumped up and down as the Eagles celebrated a 42-13 thrashing of Calhoun Academy in the first round of the SCISAA Class 2-A playoffs. His excitement -- while unusual -- was no surprise, however.
"He has too much energy," Lewis said. "We've got to find something else for him to do. ... He was getting all giddy and goofy. That's not like him, but it's because he has energy."
It was energy the senior normally expends between the sidelines for Hilton Head Christian. But for the second straight week, Chisholm was forced to sit as he recovers from a bruised clavicle, paving the way for backups Brad Meccariello and DeAngelo Clark.
Never miss a local story.
And if the reserves keep playing the way they are, Chisholm might not be back any time soon.
A week after totaling three touchdowns in a win over Hilton Head Prep, the duo once again shined, combining to run for 127 yards and four touchdowns on just 13 carries in Hilton Head Christian's playoff opener.
"Tyler was there with us in spirit," said Meccariello, who rushed for 61 yards and three scores. "He's there with us every practice encouraging us. ... (DeAngelo) has been fantastic the last couple games. I think he learned a lot from watching Tyler."
Chisholm was relegated to kicking duties, which at least got the senior the opportunity to see the field. Hilton Head Christian (10-1) worked over the outmanned Cavaliers, building a 28-0 lead before the lead ballooned to 42 midway through the third quarter.
Everyone got in on the action. Meccariello started the rout with an 8-yard scoring plunge after Calhoun Academy (5-6) fumbled on the opening drive. Quarterback Caleb Lewis found receiver Zach Polk streaking down the middle of the field uncovered for a 47-yard touchdown.
In the second quarter, Clark registered a 25-yard score and Lewis added his second touchdown pass of the night on a third-and-long heave, connecting with Jamario Williams on a 67-yard strike.
Meccariello capped the Eagles' scoring with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns.
"That's all a credit to our offensive line," Meccariello said. "They had so much criticism and doubts in the early season and summer. They've proven themselves so far. That's all on them."
The defense did its part as well. The Cavaliers tallied just three first downs before halftime and didn't crack the scoring column until the fourth quarter, after the Eagles' starters gave way to the reserves. Calhoun Academy was held to just 166 yards of total offense, 132 of which came on the Cavs' final two drives.
"The defense played great, the O-line played great," Caleb Lewis said. " ... We played a really well-rounded game."
About the only downside of the Eagles' dominating win came at receiver, where Brandon Qualls suffered what Lewis believes to be a torn left ACL. The senior will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Up next for Hilton Head Christian is a home date with Florence Christian this week in the semifinals. The school captured its first playoff victory Friday with a 56-38 win over Palmetto Christian.
Chisholm expects to be at running back for that game. And if he isn't, Lewis will just have to put up with his abundance of energy for one more week.
"I was seriously talking to coach asking if he would do a short kick or something like that," Chisholm quipped, "just so i could get back into it."
