When Brooke Busby finished her No. 1 singles match Thursday, she was supposed to grab a snack and head down to the other end of the Hilton Head Island High School courts and warm up for a possible No. 1 doubles match.
The senior didn't bother.
Shortly after her 6-0, 6-1 win over Haley Phillips was over, the rest were, too, and in roughly 45 minutes, the Seahawks sent Gilbert on its way, 6-0, in the first round of the Class 3-A Lower State tennis playoffs.
The Seahawks (16-2), on a quest for their sixth straight Class 3-A championship, may have had as much trouble with the wind as they did with the Indians (10-7).
"This was kind of like a warm-up for the playoffs," Busby said. "I think the rest of the matches are going to get a lot harder. I'm not nervous, but I'm not cocky. We should stay focused. I believe our team is going to win because we dominated our region. But I don't think we're cocky about it."
Hilton Head High didn't face much resistance. No Gilbert player won more than a single game in any of the five singles matches.
Logan Danzell, the Seahawks' No. 3 singles player who is shooting for her fifth tennis championship ring, said the team had to stay focused.
"This was a chance to work on things," said Danzell, who beat Harlee Miller 6-0, 6-0. "But you definitely have to take a step back and realize that if you lose a match, you're out for good. We have to say level-headed."
Hilton Head High coach Jennifer Weitekamper isn't worried that her team will let the easy win go to their heads.
"Our region is not tough, and my girls are good overall, but they're young," Weitekamper said. "But five state titles have not blown their heads up yet. I'm blessed with a tennis community I can say 'thank you' to, but even my seniors know they aren't guaranteed another ring."
The Seahawks advance to the second round, where they will host Berkeley at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
