With its third win this season over Colleton Prep, the Thomas Heyward Academy softball team advanced to next week's SCISAA Class 2-A championship series against Marlboro Academy.
The defending state champion Rebels knocked off Williamsburg Academy, 12-0, to start their day Saturday in the SCISAA state tournament in Lexington, and then took down Colleton Prep 5-0 to punch their ticket to the finals.
They will meet a Marlboro County team that they just faced to end the regular season. The Rebels won both games the teams played this year, winning 1-0 and 2-1.
In Saturday's five-inning win over Williamsburg, Kayla Canavan went 3 for 3 with fvie RBIs, and Andrea Daring had a home run and three RBIs. Taylor Ernesitine went 2 for 2 with an RBI, Brielle Jungblut was 2 for 4, and Chandler Cook, Jamie Malphrus and Caitlyn Cooler all were 1 for 2.

Ashlie Layman got the win in the first game, allowing one hit and striking out six. She also went the distance in the shutout of Colleton Prep, striking out eight. Layman was backed by a defense that committed only two errors all weekend.
Jungblut led the offense against Colleton Prep, going 3 for 4. Layman was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, Canavan was 2 for 2 and Malphrus went 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs.
"We're very focused," Thomas Heyward coach Bob Layman said. "Today we did really well. Defense was sharp, bats were sharp, pitching was sharp."
The SCISAA Class 2-A championship series starts at 5 p.m. Monday at Marlboro Academy. Game 2 is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thomas Heyward, and Game 3, if necessary, will be played Wednesday at a neutral site -- Holly Hill Academy.
Governor's School 2, Hardeeville 1: Alex Morales scored off a corner kick in the 15th minute for Hardeeville, but they were unable to pull off the win in Hartsville, falling in the third round of the Class 1-A playoffs.
The Governor's School scored the winning goal in the 70th minute.
