Beaufort High School defensive coordinator Jerry Hatcher was fired Wednesday after eight seasons with the Eagles.
The 2011 football season marked the Eagles' first losing season under head coach Mark Clifford. And Clifford told Hatcher on Wednesday he had offered the coordinator's job to a coach outside the program.
"He made a decision," Hatcher said. "I disagree with it. I thought it was a bad decision. But he's the head coach. You move on. That's part of being a coach. You get fired."
Hatcher said he will remain in Beaufort County. He was a finalist for Battery Creek's head football coaching vacancy last year and said he would apply for the Whale Branch High School football job recently vacated by Rob D'Amato. Hatcher said he hoped to remain at Beaufort High as a weightlifting teacher until another coaching opportunity arises.
Beaufort High finished 5-6 in 2011 and missed the Class 4-A playoffs. In 2010, Beaufort High's defense ranked among the top scoring defenses in Class 4-A. But the downturn this past season spawned the change. The Eagles shut out Hilton Head Island High School and West Ashley, but allowed an average of 33.5 points per game during their six losses.
"We had a good year, we had a good football team but had some tough losses," Clifford said. "I thought it might be a good time for some subtle changes here and there."
Clifford said a new coordinator had not yet been hired, that he was talking to two coaches about the job. He wants the new staff in place by March 1.
