Hilton Head Christian Academy has another new basketball coach -- sort of.
First-year boys basketball coach Kenny Conroy will also coach the Eagles' girls team this season, the school announced Friday, replacing Tommy Lewis.
Lewis, who is also the school's athletics director and head football coach, led the girls basketball program for one season. Lewis is stepping aside for multiple reasons, he said, including to spend more time with his growing family -- he and his wife, Meghan, adopted two boys from Liberia in February and April and are now raising five children.
He and headmaster Matt Skinner also felt the girls basketball program would be better served with a coach that could devote more time to the team during the preseason, something that is impossible for Lewis with the football team often playing deep into the playoffs.
Never miss a local story.
"That hasn't really changed since last year, but it didn't really work all that well last year, either," Lewis said. "At least not as well as I had hoped."
Conroy was hired in April for his second stint at Hilton Head Christian. He took over the boys basketball program from Vinnie Emery, who took the job on an interim basis for one season, and became the school's assistant athletics director.
Now, he'll add girls basketball to his duties, which is familiar territory for Conroy. He was the boys and girls basketball coach at Savannah's Bible Baptist School before returning to Hilton Head Christian.
"Everything just made sense," Lewis said. "I definitely believe this is in the best interest of the girls program, our school, and also my family."
