One of two Beaufort County high school athletics director positions opening next school year may be filled within the next two weeks, while the other school will continue its search, according to sources on the search committee.
Whale Branch High School has selected its next athletics director and is awaiting approval from the Beaufort County School District's superintendent and school board, principal Priscilla Drake said.
Hilton Head High, on the other hand, will conduct a second round of interviews before reaching its decision, principal Amanda O'Nan said.
Candidates for both positions met with a six-member interview committee on May 20.
Never miss a local story.
Drake said the committee made a recommendation to Superintendent Valerie Truesdale to fill Whale Branch's opening. The school might announce a hire following the next school board meeting on June 9, said Jackie Rosswurm, the district's chief of human resources.
The committee did not reach a decision for Hilton Head High's opening, so it plans to bring back one candidate, along with a handful of new ones, for a second round of interviews next month. Those interviews have not yet been scheduled, Rosswurm said.
"We have a lot of great candidates, though I'm not pressured to make a decision right now," O'Nan said. "... I still have my eyes open."
Following its June 9 meeting, the school board will next meet on June 21. Rosswurm is hopeful the board will have a recommendation to approve by then.
