Hilton Head High takes a six-stroke lead into today's final round of the Class 3-A state golf tournament at Quail Creek Golf Club in Conway. The Seahawks fought through rainy conditions in Monday's first round, turning in a team score of 319 to lead the 12-team field.
"It started pouring when we were on (hole) 13," Hilton Head High coach Rawn Grant said. "We had to play through it. We played like we're capable of playing today and it was good to see."
Jackie Budidharma led the Seahawks with a 77, the fourth-best score of the day. Lily Bartell also had a solid round, turning in a 78. Other Hilton Head High scorers were Samantha O'Donnell with an 81 and Nathalie Lezcano with an 83. Only the top four scores from each team are used.
"Jackie played awesome today, she did really well," Grant said. "She played with the No. 1 girls and she held her own."
A.C. Flora is in second place with 325 points, followed by Chapin with 327 points, Blue Ridge with 340 points and defending state champion Bluffton with 343 points.
For the Bobcats, Sammie Buchanan led the way with a 76, the third-best score of the first round. Other Bluffton scorers were Brandi Hammonds with an 83, Kylie Nizolek with an 85 and Kasidy Beckel with a 99.
Strom Thurmond's McKenzie Talbert had the best round of the day with a 71. A.C. Flora's Collins Bradshaw is in second place individually with a 72.
Today's round starts at 7:30 a.m.
"I think we can win it, but it's going to be a battle," Grant said.
