SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Hilton Head Island's Karen Ferree saw her run at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur come to an end Tuesday evening, as she was eliminated by former champion Mina Hardin in the Round of 16 at CordeValle Golf Club.
Ferree began the day with a 19-hole victory over Sue McMurdy, of Indiana, Pa. It was Ferree's second straight 19-hole win, after she had opened the match play portion of the tournament Monday by edging Canada's Maria-Therese Torti.
Ferree only trailed for two holes in her match against McMurdy, but couldn't shake her. Neither woman was able to get more than a 1-up lead the entire match.
McMurdy evened the match at the 18th hole after Ferree made double bogey, but the Hilton Head Islander finished off her foe on the very next hole by making par at No. 1.
In the Round of 16, Ferree found herself in a hole quickly. Hardin, of Fort Worth, Texas, won five of the first six holes to take a 4-up lead. They halved the next six holes before Hardin, the 2010 Senior Women's Amateur champion, eliminated Ferree by taking the next three holes for a 7-and-5 win.
Lisa McGill, 54, of Philadelphia, defeated stroke-play medalist Akemi Khaiat in the second round at the 5,996-yard, par-72 Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout. However, McGill was then knocked out later in the day by defending champion Ellen Port, 52, of St. Louis.
