Former USCB baseball standout Johnny Cole will get a chance to continue his career this spring after signing a contract with the Ottawa Champions of the Can-Am League.
The Can-Am League is an independent professional league with six teams in eastern Canada and the New York/New Jersey area.
Cole played one season with the Sand Sharks, earning second-team All-Sun Conference honors and a spot on the league’s Gold Glove team, and earned a degree in Communications Studies from USCB in December. As a senior, Cole started all 54 of USCB’s games and hit .333 with 18 doubles, seven homers, 40 RBIs and 41 runs. He drew a school-record 48 walks and boasted a .992 fielding percentage at first base.
“What most impressed us about Cole was that he has a great work ethic,” Champions manager Hal Lanier told the team’s official website. “But he’s also a switch hitter and a very good defensive first baseman who can play the outfield too, so he gives us that versatility.”
Never miss a local story.
Cole will report to camp April 25, and the Champions will begin their season May 19.
