Three USC Beaufort softball players and two Sand Shark baseball players were named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Teams on Thursday.
USCB softball seniors Maddie Byrd, Kristy Cook and Taylor Triplett were among 15 players named to the District 1 College Division softball team, while senior Ashly Morris and redshirt sophomore Nick Payne represented USCB on the 11-player District 1 College Division baseball team.
USCB's district is made up of NAIA and NJCAA schools from 23 states throughout the East and Southeast regions.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Byrd (3.63, Human Services) and Triplett (3.30, Business Administration) are three-time Academic All-District selections, and Triplett was a second-team Academic All-America selection in 2014 while Byrd was a third-team Academic All-America honoree in 2013. Cook (3.44, Psychology) is a two-time Academic All-District selection; Morris (3.33, Business Administration) and Payne (3.85, Business Administration) both were selected for the first time.
The CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America awards are the most prestigious awards that recognize student-athletes for their combined performance in their sport and in the classroom. To be eligible for Academic All-District consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her current institution and be nominated by his or her sports information director.
