After having only one player earn all-conference recognition in the program's first three seasons, the USC Beaufort women's soccer team tripled its total Thursday, as senior Chelsie Mummert earned second-team honors and freshman Karen Pimentel received honorable mention among the 33-player All-Sun Conference teams selected by the league's coaches.
Mummert, a goalkeeper from Summerville, is a two-time all-conference selection, having earned honorable mention as a sophomore in 2012. She had an outstanding senior campaign, ranking second in the conference with 101 saves while compiling a 2.18 goals against average and a .754 save percentage.
A member of the inaugural USCB team in 2011, Mummert finishes her four-year career with 368 saves, a 2.50 goals against average, a .736 save percentage and 11 shutouts.
"I have always felt Chelsie was a top goalkeeper in our conference, and this year the opposing coaches took notice," USCB coach Ed Heberling said. "Her athleticism has allowed her to be a great shot-stopper, which allowed us to stay in many games. She has worked hard for this, and it is well-deserved."
Never miss a local story.
Pimentel, a versatile player from Los Angeles, Calif., made a huge impact in her first season at USCB. She spent most of the season anchoring the defense at center back but moved forward late in the season to help jumpstart the Sand Sharks' attack.
Pimentel scored goals in each of USCB's final three regular-season games, all of which the Sand Sharks won to earn a spot in the Sun Conference tournament, and she added two assists over that span, tying for second on the team in goals (4) and points (10).
"Karen's versatility and team-first attitude is a tremendous asset to our program," Heberling said. "Karen played as a defender, midfielder and forward this year and made an impact in all three positions. I look forward to seeing Karen continue to develop in the future."
USCB also had two players named to the All-Academic Team with sophomores Shannon Blair and Brittany Lorentz making the grade. In order to be eligible for the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and must have been enrolled at their institution for a minimum of one full academic year.
