Thomas University posted the best team score for the second straight day and increased its lead to 12 shots after the second round of the Sun Conference Men's Golf Championship at Savannah Quarters Country Club.
Meanwhile, USC Beaufort worked to close the gap.
Sam Jackson fired a 6-under-par 66 to lead the Night Hawks to a team score of 2-under 286. Their 36-hole total of 578 is well clear of second-place Northwood (590). Jackson (73-66--139) has a three-shot lead over USCB junior Chandler McDonald, who carded his second straight round of 1-under 71 on Tuesday.
USCB remained in ninth place but made a big move to close on the rest of the field. The Sand Sharks shaved 16 shots off their first round score to post a 294 and sit at 604 through 36 holes, just 10 shots behind third-place Johnson & Wales.
Southeastern and Embry-Riddle are tied for fourth at 595, followed by Webber International (597), Warner (600) and SCAD Savannah (603). Ave Maria is 10th at 653.
Freshman Alan Cooke (83-69--152) aided the Sand Sharks' big turnaround by shooting 3 under in the second round, moving him into a tie for 28th. Sophomore Brad Curren (79-76--155) is tied for 36th, followed by senior Brian Langley (79-79--158) and junior Chandler Vilcheck (81-78--159).
The final round begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday with players starting on the first and 10th tees. USCB's players will tee off No. 10 beginning at 8:27 a.m.
