JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of South Carolina Beaufort softball team's all-time win total hit triple digits Thursday, as the 16th-ranked Sand Sharks picked up their 100th and 101st victories in a doubleheader sweep at Edward Waters.
Taylor Triplett knocked in two runs in the opener and blasted a two-run home run among her three hits in the finale as the Sand Sharks (21-5) got strong pitching in both games as they improved to 101-22 in the program's three-year history.
Freshman Kendall Jumper (2-1) went the distance in the first game, a 5-2 win, holding the Tigers to two unearned runs on four hits while striking out five. Edward Waters scored in the first and Chantel Stiff made it stand up for three innings.
Triplett's two-run single in the fourth put USCB on top, and the Sand Sharks didn't relent. Chelsey Blasingame added an RBI single in the fifth and USCB pushed across two in the seventh on an error and a Melanie Goolsby RBI single.
Junior Kristy Cook (8-3) and sophomore Ashlie Layman combined for a one-hit, 8-0 shutout in the nightcap. Cook went four innings, allowing one hit and one walk, and Layman struck out three over two perfect frames for her first save of the season.
Amanda Brown started the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Mariaha Sanborn and Whitley Martin added RBI singles in the third to make it 3-0.
The Sand Sharks broke it open with five runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule. Goolsby plated two runs with a single and Triplett followed with her team-leading eighth home run.
The Sand Sharks are off this weekend before heading to Florida for Sun Conference doubleheaders at Webber International on April 5 and Embry-Riddle on April 6.
