Two USC Beaufort student-athletes picked up Sun Conference Player of the Week awards Monday, as softball shortstop Alexandria Simmons and men's golfer Brad Curren were honored in voting by the league's sports information directors.
Simmons, a senior shortstop from Pendleton, earned softball Player of the Week honors for the first time after going 4 for 6 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs in USCB's doubleheader split with Southeastern (Fla.) to open conference play. Her two-run blast in Game 1 put USCB ahead for good and she added a two-run shot in Game 2. Simmons has hit safely in seven straight games and 18 of her last 19, and she has reached base in 19 straight contests.
Curren, a sophomore from Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia, picked up his first Player of the Week award after he finished second at the 25th annual Eagle Invitational hosted by Embry-Riddle (Fla.), leading the Sand Sharks to a second-place showing behind No. 6 William Woods (Mo.). His final-round 68 -- which included a hole-in-one -- was the lowest score of the tournament.
