The USC Beaufort men's golf team saved its best round of the tournament for last, climbing two spots on the leaderboard to claim a runner-up finish in the Sand Shark Classic on Tuesday at Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie.
The Sand Sharks had won the event the previous two years.
Third-ranked Coastal Georgia ran away with the title, posting a team score of 1-under-par 863 for the 54-hole event to beat host USCB by 21 shots.
USCB posted a final round of 291, finishing at 884 and vaulting over Sun Conference rivals Johnson & Wales (886) and Southeastern (888).
Coastal Georgia's Dylan Freeman won the individual title in a playoff after a three-way tie at 3-under-par 213. Freeman made a birdie on the par-4 17th hole to top teammate Chase Miller and Johnson & Wales' Matt Morin.
Freshman Alan Cooke (71-75-73--219) and junior Chandler Vilcheck (70-76-73--219) led the Sand Sharks, tying for eighth at 3-over. Junior Chandler McDonald (81-70-71--222) tied for 11th, followed by defending champion Brian Langley (75-76-74--225) in a tie for 16th and sophomore Brad Curren (80-76-74--230) in a tie for 27th.
USCB's "B" team finished sixth with junior Chris Finke (73-75-75--223) leading the way.
The USCB women's golf team knocked seven strokes off its first-round score in Tuesday's final round but finished 12th in an 18-team field at the Hilton Head Lakes Invitational in Hardeeville.
The Sand Sharks posted a team score of 335 on Tuesday to finish the 36-hole event at 677. Limestone beat Wingate in a playoff to claim the title after the two tied for the best team score at 632.
Montevallo was third at 640, followed by Coker (657), Queens (659), North Greenville (663) and King (664).
King's Elizabeth Swallow (76-76--152) won the individual title by one shot over North Greenville's AnnaLeis Dibert (75-78--153), Limestone's Brittany LaPadula (79-74--153) and Wingate's Caitlin Starrs (77-76--153).
Junior Tori DeGroodt (84-79--163) led USCB, tying for 19th. Junior Samantha O'Donnell (90-80--170) tied for 43rd, followed by sophomore Lina Sekerkova (86-87--173) and senior Kendra Collins (84-89--173) in a tie for 51st, and sophomore Hayley Miller (88-93--181) in a tie for 73rd.
Both USCB teams return to action Monday and Tuesday at the Embry-Riddle Eagle Invitational, the Sun Conference's spring major at LPGA International's Champions Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
