AIKEN, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina Beaufort women's soccer team was unable to bring home a victory after its first road trip of the season, falling 2-0 to sister school USC Aiken on Saturday.
The Pacers (1-1) scored an early goal in each half, taking the lead on Megan Smits' goal in the 11th minute and capping the scoring when Smits assisted on Hannah Allison's goal in the 54th minute.
The Sand Sharks (1-3-1) managed only five shots -- two on goal -- while being shut out for the second time this season. USCB's closest chance came when freshman Megan Benoist blasted a free kick off the crossbar, but the rebound came back too hard for the Sand Sharks to generate a second-chance opportunity.
The performance of the back line was encouraging, as freshmen Poppy Miller and Shannon Blair played strong in the middle and limited the Pacers' scoring chances. Junior goalkeeper Chelsie Mummert stopped eight shots for USCB.
Never miss a local story.
The Sand Sharks return home Thursday, facing Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in a non-conference match at 4 p.m. at Fin Land Field.
