CELEBRATION, Fla. -- The University of South Carolina Beaufort men's golf team went into the Sun Conference Championship with the mindset that nothing short of a conference title would earn the 20th-ranked Sand Sharks a spot in the NAIA National Championships.
They'll soon find out if a runner-up finish will do the trick.
USCB posted a team score of 289 in Tuesday's final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 884, but the Sand Sharks finished 24 shots behind champion Southeastern. The Fire were led by individual champion Linzy Clark (69-71-72--212), who won a playoff over SCAD Savannah's Billy Nisbet for the title.
The Sand Sharks edged Johnson & Wales (886) and SCAD Savannah (886) for runner-up honors. Warner (888) finished fifth, followed by Northwood (897), St. Thomas (899), Thomas (899), Webber International (905), Embry-Riddle (925) and Ave Maria (1067).
Senior Tyler Jacobs (77-69-72--218) tied for eighth to lead the Sand Sharks, followed by freshman Brad Curren (75-72-73--220) in 13th and senior Travis Cashion (76-72-73--221) in a tie for 14th. Sophomore Chris Finke (83-77-71--231) finished 35th and junior Owen Bell (80-74-81--235) tied for 40th.
USCB junior Brian Langley was among 10 players named to the All-Sun Conference team.
The Sand Sharks now await Thursday's announcement of the qualifiers for the NAIA National Championship, which will be played May 14-17 at Creekside Golf Club in Salem, Ore.
