The USC Beaufort men's golf team posted the best score of the opening round but slipped into a tie for third after the second round of the Northwood Seahawk Shootout on Monday at North Palm Beach (Fla.) Country Club.
The Sand Sharks showed their ability in the first round -- and their inexperience in the second. Holding a two-shot lead after a 292 in the first round, they posted a team score of 303 in the afternoon 18 and slipped two spots. St. Thomas leads at 582, three shots ahead of Johnson & Wales and 13 shots clear of USCB and Southeastern.
Freshman Cory Cottrell is leading the way for the Sand Sharks, tied for seventh after his opening round of even-par 71 and second-round 74.
Senior Travis Cashion posted rounds of 74 and 73 and is tied for 10th, and junior Brian Langley shot 71-77 and is tied for 15th. Senior Tyler Jacobs (T-32nd, 76-79) and freshman Bradford Curren (T-34th, 76-81) rounded out the lineup.
"I saw a lot of potential but saw a lot of mental mistakes late in the day," coach Chris Cuneo said. "We are going to have to go out tomorrow and prove we are better than we showed this afternoon."
The Sand Sharks begin the final round at 8:10 this morning.
