The USC Beaufort softball team played another close Sun Conference game, but this one didn't go the Sand Sharks' way, as St. Thomas scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 3-2 win in the opener of a three-game series Friday night in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Brenda Emerson's single up the middle scored the tying and winning runs to lift the Bobcats (5-10, 2-2).
Emerson (5-4) drove in all three Bobcats runs and also was the winning pitcher. She allowed two unearned runs on five hits and struck out nine in a complete game.
USCB (24-5, 6-3) tied it at one on Chelsey Blasingame's RBI single to the left side of the infield. USCB took the lead an inning later when Katie Rietkovich doubled and came around to score on an error.
Sand Sharks ace Kristy Cook (12-2) pitched out of jams for most of the game, stranding 10 St. Thomas runners. She left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two in the fourth and sixth to help USCB take a 2-1 lead into the seventh.
But the Bobcats managed three consecutive singles with one out in the inning to rally for the win.
The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon today.
