The USC Beaufort men's golf team posted a 9-under-par 271 score on the par-70 Scarlet Course at Paradise Point Golf Club in Camp LeJeune, N.C., giving the Sand Sharks a strong start to the 41st annual Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
Brian Langley led the Sand Sharks with a 3-under 67, followed closely by Mark Phillips, Luke McClellan and Jack Bingham with 68s. Travis Cashion rounded out the lineup with a 75.
After their round, the Sand Sharks had the opportunity to experiment with a weapons simulator on the Marine Corps base at Camp LeJeune, which coach Chris Cuneo described as an "awesome" experience.
For the first two rounds, the 32-team field is split over two courses -- the 5,911-yard Scarlet Course and the 7,040-yard, par-72 Gold Course. After the second round, the field is split into two flights, with the top flight playing the Gold Course in the final round and the second flight playing the Scarlet Course.
