The Hilton Head Dixie Boys defeated Mullins 9-8 on Thursday to advance to the Dixie Boys World Series held Aug. 2 through 6 in Bossier City, La.
But getting there is a whole other story.
Transportation, food and lodging for 16 players and coaches, along with their families, is going to cost thousands of dollars, and the team has less than a week to plan, all while still holding regular practices.
The team is asking for the community's help and will hold a World Series fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Head Island Mellow Mushroom.
Never miss a local story.
The team will receive a portion of the proceeds from sales, while the players will bus tables and solicit donations, giving away Hilton Head Island bumper stickers for donations of more than $10.
In addition, the team is inviting anyone who's interested to attend team practices from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday through Wednesday at Crossings Park to watch and encourage the boys at practice or support their efforts.
