When the Week of Champions rolls around this summer, some new faces will be working with the area kids who attend the camps, to be held June 9 to June 13. At least a dozen new athletes and coaches have committed to give their time.
The Week of Champions, in its 36th year, is a nonprofit volunteer organization providing sports camps for children, ages 8 to 12, free of charge. Professional and college athletes run the camps, where they teach the kids to be champions on and off the field.
WOC is run by the South Coastal Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"Once the ministry is experienced, you can't keep them away," WOC director Chuck Workman said. "It's experiencing the camp and then sharing the ministry. We're excited, the athletes who have been here before are excited, the kids are excited. That's why the names come."
Never miss a local story.
Among the newcomers are former Clemson running back Reggie Merriweather and wide receiver Tyler Grisham, along with former Wake Forest running back De'Angelo Bryant.
"Reggie said, 'I want to give back, how do I give back?' " Workman said. "That's when he got Bryant involved. I'm excited for Reggie to come. We talk every other week. It's like he's been here before."
WOC also landed Kim Williams, the winningest volleyball coach in University of South Carolina history.
"The club sport is so big in the Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort community," Workman said, "we needed to respond to the needs of our females athletes."
Other commitments include Florida State men's tennis coach Dwayne Hultquist, former major league pitchers Lee Guetterman ad Randy Tomlin, former Atlanta Brave Steve Sisco, Lander softball coach Tina Whitlock, North Greenville softball coach Sarah Hall and former VMI basketball players Travis and Chavis Holmes.
This year's keynote speaker, announced in January, is former NFL safety Chris Reis. Reis recovered the onside kick to open the second half for New Orleans in the Saints' 31-17 win over Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV.
According to Workman, the WOC is still in need of up to 250 volunteers.
