The Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is set to host the annual Jean Ribaut Cup/Beaufort Race Weekend again this year, beginning Friday, assuming Mother Nature cooperates.
The weekend is centered around the main event, the Jean Ribaut Cup, which will be sailed Saturday on Port Royal Sound.
However, the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms Saturday afternoon.
"The option we have is most likely to move the race to Sunday," event chairman Roy Crocker said Thursday. "The boats are basically all from BYSC or Dataw. I'm sure it will have some negative impact, but I'm sure we'll still get a decent turnout."
Crocker said 14 boats are expected to sail in the Jean Ribaut Cup.
In addition to the Ribaut Cup, there will be PHRF races on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Five to seven boats are expected for each of those races, Crocker said.
PHRF is the handicapping system used for yacht racing in America.
A captains' meeting and cocktail party will be held Friday evening, and the trophy presentation for the Jean Ribaut Cup will follow racing on Saturday, or Sunday if the weather forces it. Both events are at the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club.
