Al Olivetti spared no words.
"(We) will host the state's best athletes," he said.
Olivetti was referencing Saturday morning's Go Tri Sports Triathlon at Hilton Head, which returns to the Lowcountry for the 18th straight year. The event is the culmination of a 16-race series that started in March with participants earning points along the way.
A series winner will be named on Saturday after the final triathlon of the season.
"Really, anyone who's anybody in the triathlon world in South Carolina participates in this series and vies for these awards," Olivetti said.
The sprint distance triathlon, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday on Coligny Beach, will feature a 500-yard swim in the ocean, a 12-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run. The grueling morning will conclude in Coligny's nearby parking lot.
An awards banquet will follow later in the evening at the Holiday Inn, where the season's winners will be honored. Olivetti compared the year-long scoring to that of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which gives points to drivers based upon their finish in each race.
Registration for the triathlon will remain open until it starts. Those interested in participating can do so for $75. About 250 entrants are expected this year, Olivetti said.
