Irmo had to beat Hilton Head twice on Wednesday in order to win the Dixie Majors State Tournament in Lancaster.
Irmo did it once, but Hilton Head won the second game 17-4 to claim the state championship in the tournament for players ages 15 to 19. With the victory, Hilton Head earned berth in the Dixie Majors World Series beginning July 26 in North Charleston.
Irmo kept its hopes alive by handing Hilton Head a heartbreaking 17-16 defeat in the first game. The winning run scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning when pitcher Chase Clayton threw the ball over the head of third baseman Dylan Powell, allowing the runner on third to trot home with the winning run.
Hilton Head made at least a half dozen errors in Game 1.

"We were flat fielding," Hilton Head coach Steve Marbut said.
But the second game was all Hilton Head. Randy Young threw a complete game despite striking out just two. He pitched to contact, inducing a lot of ground balls, including two double plays.
"He pitched a heck of a game," Marbut said.
At the plate, Hilton Head was led by Michael Grant, who went 4 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Taylor Place was 3 for 3 and added three walks and an RBI.
Aaron Facenda was 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI. Powell was 0 for 1, but he drew five walks, and Young was 2 for 4 at the plate with a walk and two RBIs.
Hilton Head was also awarded the team Sportsmanship Award.
