DragonBoat Beaufort achieved a first over the weekend when it brought home gold and silver medals from the Charleston Dragon Boat Festival.
A year removed form its first actual competition -- the crew practiced for months sitting in chairs and paddling with brooms -- the 21-member team finished its 250-meter heat in 1 minute, 13 seconds.
That time put DragonBoat Beaufort in the C division, much improved over last year's G-division performance.
"We really stepped up this year, a lot," DragonBoat Beaufort secretary Erica Dickerson said.
Never miss a local story.
In the actual C division race, the Beaufort team finished second, earning the team its silver medals.
Because the DragonBoat Beaufort team is made up of cancer survivors and supporters, it qualifies in the Cancer Survivor Team division, as well. DragonBoat Beaufort's time was good enough for gold medals among the group.
Also, DragonBoat Beaufort members Michelle Mayer and John Dickerson were presented medals for their fundraising efforts.
DragonBoat Beaufort will host its first DragonBoat Race Day on July 20 as part of the Beaufort Water Festival. DragonBoat Beaufort will not race in the event but will instead put on the race.
"It's a really big effort," John Dickerson said. "But it's worth it."
