Frequently Asked Questions
This page contains answers to the most frequent questions asked about islandpacket.com. If you have a question about the site that is not answered below, please contact the New Media Department at info@islandpacket.com or by calling (843) 706-8187.
Q. I'm having trouble finding the story or picture I saw in the paper on islandpacket.com.
A. Most local content from The Packet is posted on the site in the corresponding section (news, sports, features, etc.). However, due to copyright and timeliness issues, wire service stories and photos (such as from the Associated Press) that appear in the newspaper are not found on islandpacket.com. The Island Packet Online has a 24-Hour News feed for that kind of information.
Q. I'm having trouble registering for an account on islandpacket.com.
A. Frequently asked questions and solutions to these kind of issues can be found in the registration help section.
Q. How far back can I search for stories on your Web site?
A. The Island Packet Online's archive dates back to June 2000. All local stories, columns, obituaries and announcements since that time are in the archives. There is no charge at this time to retrieve or view archived stories. If you need to find a story published before June 2000, the Hilton Head Island Public Library, located on Beach City Road, has every edition of The Island Packet on microfilm.
Q. What is the best way to conduct a search of your site?
A. For best results, use our Local Search. Start with the most specific information you have. For example, if you know the name of someone in the story, use that, especially if that person is not often in the paper. Also, try using general keywords, such as "Sea Pines" or "Sun City," relevant to your search but be prepared to wade through more returns. Do NOT enter dates as a search query except where specifically noted in the Advanced Search. You will not get the results you want.
Q. What web browser should I use to view islandpacket.com?
A. The site has been designed to accommodate all modern web browsers, including Internet Explorer (Mac IE users, click here), Netscape, Firefox and Safari. Readers using older browsers still will be able to view the content on islandpacket.com, although it may not look as clean as on newer browsers. Click on any of the browser links above to download current versions.
Q. How often is The Island Packet Online updated?
A. Our local content is updated every day, including holidays. Our 24-Hour News sections are updated every few minutes by McClatchy Interactive.
