Watson's record-setting day leads Whale Branch boys to state track title

COLUMBIA -- Andre Watson never truly realizes just how fast he runs until playing the videotape after the fact.

And even then it's sometimes hard to believe.

"I surprise myself every time," he said.

Whale Branch boys ready to make run at state track title this weekend

This could be the year for Whale Branch. It's not like it's been a long wait, though.

In only its second year of existence, Whale Branch has to be considered one of the favorites to take home the Class 1-A boys championship at this weekend's S.C. Track and Field State Championships at Spring Valley High School in Columbia.

The Warriors finished sixth last year in their first state meet. The return of the core of that team, coupled with the addition of senior sprinter Andre Watson, has the Warriors' coaches thinking title.

BOYS SOCCER PLAYOFF PREVIEW: HHH takes streak into opener

It was an adjustment period unlike any Wayne Quinlan had encountered before.

The coach of the Hilton Head Island High boys soccer team generally knows what his Seahawks will bring to the table before each season begins. Except this year, of course, as Hilton Head High stumbled out of the gate with an 0-3 record.

"It took me longer to get a handle on this team than it has for any team that I've had that I can remember," Quinlan said. "Just to figure out who can play where, what was our shape or our formation going to be. In the preseason and in pre-region season, it was all experimentation. I'm not sure we played the same formation two matches in a row."

Hard work paying off for Ridgeland thrower Brown

Alvin Brown hears the same comments from teammates he remembers filling his head when he was a freshman.

"You make it look so easy," they tell him.

Throwing the discus wasn't always easy for the Ridgeland High School senior. He started off in ninth grade with straight power throws and no technique. His first tosses traveled only 60 feet or so. He spent that summer watching YouTube videos of some of the best throws, repeated in slow motion so that Brown could study the movements.

Whale Branch's Devonte Alston took sixth in the long jump with a mark of 22 feet, 4 inches.

Prep Roundup, April 14: Beaufort High falls in final of Hanahan baseball tourney

HANAHAN -- Friday the 13th turned out to be a good Friday for the Ashley Ridge baseball team. The Swamp Foxes rallied from a three-run deficit to top Beaufort High School, 6-5, on Friday night to win the Hanahan Invitational Tournament.

Irv Batten had another big hit to win the game. With two out in the bottom of the seventh, he hit a blooper just past the mound that pitcher Mark Jones couldn't handle. Pinch-runner Jacob Thompson scored from third, and the Swamp Foxes celebrated perhaps the biggest accomplishment in their brief, four-year history.

The night before, Batten had a two-run double that produced the winning runs in a 4-2 decision over Louisville Male (Ky.).

Smalls leads way on winning night for Beaufort High track team

Akeem Smalls is apparently not at 100 percent.

The Beaufort High sprinter has been hampered of late by his fair share of troubles. He has dealt with the flu bug for the last several days and continues to be restricted by nagging injuries to both his left hamstring and groin.

Not that anyone would have noticed Wednesday night at the Beaufort High track meet.

Playoff foes await Ridgeland, THA girls in basketball

It's down to two.

Roughly three months since the season opened with promise for many area boys and girls high school basketball teams, two girls teams -- the Ridgeland Jaguars and the Thomas Heyward Academy Rebels -- remain alive in the playoffs, and both play tonight.

Ridgeland, the defending Class 1-A state champion and the coaches' No. 1-ranked team in the preseason poll, has lived up to its billing.

Late run by Latta boys ends Ridgeland's season

Everything was going according to plan for the Ridgeland High School boys basketball team.

The Jaguars were starting to take control over visiting Latta. They held a 10-point lead with just under four minutes to play and looked well on their way to the Class 1-A Lower State semifinals. Things were looking bleak on the Vikings' bench.

Then everything changed.

Ridgeland moving on, bruised but not beaten

April Jenkins limped from a classroom adjacent to Ridgeland High School's gym, ice wrapped around a sprained left ankle.

Minutes after the Jaguars defeated Latta 59-45 in the second round of the Class 1-A playoffs, the Ridgeland guard exhibited the physical nature of the game. A heated contest culminated in ejections on both sides with less than a minute remaining.

Ridgeland advanced, bruised but not beaten. Ridgeland will travel Feb. 20 to play the Timmonsville-Baptist Hill winner.

Playoff Roundup: Ridgeland rolls in Class 1-A; Seahawks fall

The Ridgeland High School boys basketball team began its Class 1-A playoff run before Tuesday's opening round.

A victory over Whale Branch High School on Feb. 10 gave the Jaguars the No. 3 seed and a more favorable road matchup. Ridgeland knew Tuesday's opponent well, having scrimmaged Baptist Hill before the season and having seen the school annually during a holiday tournament at Burke.

So the Jaguars knew what would work Tuesday, and they rolled Baptist Hill 68-48. After the game, Ridgeland received more good news when Ridgeland coach Jeremiah Faber heard No. 4 seed Latta upset No. 1 seed C.E. Murray, meaning the Jaguars will host Latta on Friday in the second round.
