Get concrete answers on issues facing Bluffton

A third person has stepped up to run for one of two Town Council seats up for election in Bluffton.

Michael Raymond joins incumbents Charlie Wetmore and Oliver Brown on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election.

We should first thank Raymond for making sure an election will take place. There was some doubt because a state law allows election commissions to forgo holding elections if only one candidate files for each open seat and no write-in candidates declare themselves within two weeks after the filing deadline.

Raymond, a former engineer in the town's department of environmental protection, isn't exactly new blood although he would be looking at town issues from a different perspective if elected to council.

Now that we have a race, the people of greater Bluffton need to hear in the next few weeks specific plans, goals and ideas, especially for restoring the May River to its former health and making sure it doesn't backslide.

Start with these questions: What percentage of the May River and Okatie watersheds is covered by hard surfaces today? What percentage will be covered if all the development the town has approved is built?

And don't let them tell you what the Coastal Conservation League estimates the answers are. If the town hasn't calculated it or they don't know, ask them why not.

Scientists repeatedly have told us that if 10 percent of the land is covered by houses, roads, parking lots and other hard surfaces, oystering in the headwaters of tidal creeks is likely to be prohibited. If 30 percent or more of the land is covered, it brings the kinds of changes that can't be turned back completely.

Restoring and protecting the river is going to take some push, some backbone and some money from Town Council.

The town faces other issues besides protecting area rivers, but many are affected by decisions that flow from that basic promise. They include the pace and quantity of residential and commercial construction; economic development; road and school construction; and paying the bills in a time of declining tax revenue. Can the town keep its eye on long-term goals and resist short-term revenue?

Other, more specific issues are out there. Bluffton voters should bring them to these candidates and get answers from them.

The people of Bluffton should not allow the candidates to get away with broad statements. Hold them accountable. Let them know what you want.

The candidates should tell voters what ideas and strengths they bring to the table.

Leave the platitudes and the vague promises at the door. The community deserves and needs more.
