Americans voted out personal responsibility

Americans voted for the talented Barack Obama, but they also voted against individual responsibility for their lives. This vote was a long time coming, and President George W. Bush and the Republicans gave voters a reason to go the extra mile.

Responsibility starts in the family. Having children and stashing them away in day care cedes responsibility to day care operators. Being too preoccupied by business involvement or self-improvement exercises cedes responsibility to the schools.

Anyone think our high school graduates could pass the 1900 New York Board of Regents high school graduate exam? Schools are unionized. Teachers get their salary increases collectively. Teachers from kindergarten to college generally are progressive in their thinking.

After 12 or 16 years of being part of alternative history, anti-militarism, affirmative action, exploration of alternative lifestyles, all within a background of secular thought, personal responsibility is worn away. After years of watching farmers, businessmen, special interest groups and friends of government receiving handouts, personal responsibility becomes a outmoded concept. Throw in a few years of "hooking up," including a bout with a sexually transmitted disease, a possible abortion, experimentation with drugs and where do we think personal responsibility stands on the list of important concepts?

We voted who we are. We need to be cared for. We cede our freedom to our caretakers. We are France.
