Kudos to the U.S. House of Representatives and co-sponsor Rep. John M. Spratt of South Carolina for designating Oct. 18-24 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week.

By a 412-0 vote, the House affirmed that:

• The U.S. economy and our position in the world marketplace depend on having a literate, skilled workforce.

• Literacy skills are essential to the ability to get and keep a job, continue one's education, or participate in job training programs.

• The education of parents has a direct impact on the educational success of their children.

• English literacy is essential to immigrants' ability to succeed in their new home country.

Conversely, it reminds us that:

• Low literacy is associated with poor health outcomes and endangers lives of adults and their families.

• Low-literacy adults are more likely to be incarcerated, and prisoners without skills are more likely to return to prison after release.

At a time when more than 30 million American adults, including almost 11,000 Beaufort County residents -- lack basic literacy or English language skills, this resolution highlights the need for public and private support of efforts to ensure that every adult has the necessary literacy skills to succeed at home, at work, and in society.

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry has a 35-year history of strengthening our community through literacy and seeks volunteers to help advance this important mission.
