I would urge those who are focused on the inconvenience caused by the one-day rerouting of traffic for the Ironman 70.3 to instead refocus on how the $50 million injection of economic development can benefit our community.
As Mayor David Bennett suggests, there are many areas of Hilton Head Island that could better share in the economic benefits of our tourist economy. This race could be a tremendous start. Perhaps a designated portion of its proceeds could be put toward this goal.
The safety concerns can be alleviated with proper planning. Let's be honest: The real protest is about inconvenience. We can make it worthwhile.
Never miss a local story.
