It's past time to rethink and rebrand Hilton Head Island, and we should use the same instrument that helped create it -- the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing -- to reinvent it.
Hilton Head and the Heritage fed off each other with the golf courses and tournament driving housing development and community, both tied to growth in golf's popularity.
Today, both have waned, and we see little desire in local officials to pursue growth in other areas. Where does this leave us as a community, a tourist destination, a home?
How does a RBC Family Heritage Golf tournament sound? It would be hosted by a family-centered community living in harmony with nature, on the beach, and protecting our native flora and fauna. What a great legacy to protect, build and encourage others to visit and see how sustainable development is not a liberal talking point but a real world solution to the crushing pressure of uncontrolled development, over-commercialization and political naivete.

Let's create some sustainable, ecologically sensitive, family-oriented attractions, add child-friendly tees to some of the golf courses, direct marketing dollars to families with kids and recapture the prestige, the market share, the attention and dollars of a new generation. It's about leadership, vision and passion.
