Developer Blanchard & Calhoun originally received strong support for the planned Shelter Cove Towne Centre redevelopment project by promising to provide affordable housing for our young teachers, nurses, journalists and firefighters. These core citizens sustain our community by teaching our children, caring for the elderly and sick and protecting the citizens of Hilton Head Island. Now Blanchard & Calhoun allege in a biased and unchallenged survey it conducted that 26 individuals prefer more luxurious apartments with more closet space for their shoes as well as considerably higher monthly rents, thereby shutting out our young working professionals from affordable housing.
Sadly, Mayor Drew Laughlin and Town Council have forgotten the working professionals in favor of more upscale individuals who desire luxurious accommodations for their shoes. Equally as sad, many real estate and property managers are chomping at the bit to serve these well-heeled newcomers.
