It is ludicrous to think that any public hearing in a decision-making process would entertain intervention, influence or manipulation by "outsiders" to determine what is in the best interest of a community in which they have no vested interest.
The solicitation by a clergyman of pastors in neighboring counties and their congregations to engage in a Jasper County issue was wrong. First, it was an orchestrated political patronization to sustain the status quo of the Jasper County political machine. And it was to sabotage a transparent process that allows bona fide residents of the county the rare opportunity to come before the public and express their opinion on an action without fear of reprisal or humiliation.
I take exception to the pastor's statement that his email was just his humor. The dire status of education in our schools is no laughing matter.
A reported extract from the email reads "... those who oppose equity and fairness will be there in numbers ..." That is meant to suggest that a specific segment of the population in Jasper County is the enemy and a threat. The threat is that the old way of doing business is at risk.
Let's work together and get results that focus on the children. Continuing to detract from the real issues by dusting off the race card to polarize a targeted constituency will get us absolutely nowhere.
