I am writing in response to a political ad in the Oct. 17 issue of the newspaper regarding our mayoral race. Being in the forefront of the negotiations involving the sponsorship of the RBC Heritage, our entire community should be very appreciative of the efforts made by Mayor Drew Laughlin, Town Council and the Hilton Head Island community in coming to the support of the tournament.
Laughlin offered the Heritage Classic Foundation the Town Council's unqualified support, including financial support, if needed. He and all of the Town Council members were an important part of the overall team effort by community leaders and organizations that enabled us to successfully secure the tournament. Any criticism directed to Laughlin regarding these efforts is misdirected.
I also will state that I have never heard Laughlin take credit for "rescuing" the golf tournament. He has always given credit to the town and all of the other participants and organizations involved.
Also, as a very long-time resident, I would hope that the candidates running for political office would focus on issues and not engage in negative ads or personal attacks. That is something that we see too much of from other political campaigns.
Never miss a local story.
I hope that our community prefers to not see such ads in our local elections. Our island has set standards that few communities can match. Let's do the same in our campaigning.
