How nice that Southside Park on the western end of Southside Boulevard in Beaufort will have a usable dog park. I'm happy for the dogs and their owners.
The area near the park is so attractive, meaning the road is paved and the ditches have working drainage systems so excess water does not accumulate on the roadways or in yards.
However, the eastern end of Southside Boulevard, above Duncan Drive, is another story. Other than adding a sidewalk, there have been no significant renovations to the road or ditches in two decades.
A long section of sidewalk on one side of the road remains broken, ugly and dangerous. The drainage ditches and pipes are so blocked that water overflows and backs up into my yard, creating a pond.
Never miss a local story.
Over the years, this problem has gotten worse. The water now reaches the house and flows into an outside workshop. I am afraid if the rains are heavy and sustained, I will have water enter my home.
We have talked to the city, county and state and shown them pictures. Everyone agrees this is a problem. Unfortunately, that is as far as it gets.
With all the taxes a resident of Beaufort pays, it seems something should have been done long ago. Somewhere, there is at least one political representative of Beaufort who will listen -- listen and then do something about it.
