In response to an Aug. 24 letter, we attended the meeting about illegal immigrants, and Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner was absolutely correct in what he said.
He said that there are many citizens in Beaufort County who are in desperate need of public assistance and should be taken care of first. In other words, we need to take care of our own before we help illegal immigrants. You say that these illegal immigrants are not eligible for assistance; however, they are given temporary housing, food and medical attention as soon as they come here. If you want to sponsor children from other countries, that is your choice, but many of us want our own citizens to have the opportunity to rise above the poverty level.
