After reading many of the articles about the congestion on U.S. 278, I decided to give my opinion.
We bought a condo on the island and spent last winter here. We found it very difficult to find the places for which we were looking. I realize that part of Hilton Head's image is to keep it looking "less commercialized," but well-placed, well-designed signs located ahead of hidden plazas, etc. would greatly decrease the confusion of where to turn. They would also keep those who want to turn in the appropriate lane and those who are driving through in the center lane. There would be less slowing down by those searching for a location.
I was also surprised at the lack of lighting on the highway at night. A store employee told me you have to "follow the crumbs" home at night and that she does not like to be out at night. Helping people maneuver a populated, little island would be very helpful, especially when I read that there are many more plans that will add to the congestion.
Never miss a local story.
