Congratulations to the recent writer who has been married 58 years. ("No reason to fear same-sex marriage," June 27.) They are evidently people of great integrity and character to make this achievement happen.
However, one cannot help wonder what would have happened if a conventional marriage had been redefined back when they got married. That definition is a marriage between one man and one woman.
Would couples marrying in that era still have participated in a traditional marriage? Or would they have opted for a marriage of polyandry (multiple husbands) or polygamy (multiple spouses)?
Marriage is the foundation of our society. Our society would have been radically affected if couples from that generation had chosen alternate forms of marriage.
