Recently a reader informed us that 31,487 scientists signed a petition that claimed "there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of greenhouse gases causes catastrophic heating of the earth's atmosphere."
This petition was circulated and promoted by the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, a little-known group with unknown financial backing. The writer asks us to check out credentials of the signatories of the petition. Of the more than 31,000 scientists that signed it, 72 percent did not even have a doctoral degree in any science. They certainly cannot be considered experts. Even more telling is that only 39 of the 31,487 are climatologists representing only about 0.1 percent of the known climatologists.
The writer is correct that more than 97 percent of climatologists do strongly support the mounting evidence that man contributes significantly to the production of greenhouse gases that accumulate in the atmosphere. Our National Academy of Science has strongly backed the concept that climate change is caused by man. These NAS members represent the very brightest of American scientists. One must be careful in choosing what expert to believe.
